Hidden Gem: Midwest Museum of American Art in Elkhart

Last month I had the opportunity to visit the Midwest Museum of American Art in Elkhart Indiana and it is simply a wonderful little museum.

The museum is located in an old bank. Not just any old bank, but one of those elegant old banks that used inspire awe in it’s patrons. The museum makes excellent use of the space and you get the impression that you are somewhere great. The building itself is almost a work of art.

The high point is an old bank vault that houses their Western related art collection. Speaking of Art, what exactly is on display at the Midwest Museum of Art?

Well, a fantastic assortment of the best of American art. The most famous item on display is an original Norman Rockwell oil painting. In addition to that they have a whole gallery dedicated to rare Norman Rockwell lithographs. Some of his most famous paintings are on display.

In addition to that they have many pieces on display abstract art, American impressionism, pottery, western art and so much more.

The people who run the museum are very nice and there is classical music playing through out which creates a lovely and relaxing atmosphere.
